Today morning,
You were beautiful…
How I wished I could wake up everyday
To see you beautiful just the way you are…
Today morning,
I asked why had it taken me long
to notice your beauty?
why hadn’t we met before?
where’d you been hiding all this while?
Today morning,
I realised your beauty covers your sorrow,
In your eyes, I saw the untold suffering,
Yet despite it all, I could do nothing…
Today in the morning,
I saw you, but only in my dream
Day 1/52
I always seem to draw a lot of inspiration and courage from this piece, almost like… I draw lots of energy from it, which is why I preferred it for my first over the next 51. I was still a little young and in love when I penned it down, that was actually some close to four years now. Of course young and in love doesn’t mean I was blinded (I didn’t believe in that till a few months later when I met someone special; story reserved), I was pretty much aware of my surroundings, and was so out to have all the funs any teenager that has just gained their freedom would want.
On the eve of this poem, it was definitely this one evening with my girl (I’ll call her Madrine), we had a quarrel (I don’t actually remember about what exactly), and in the morning, I had to grab a taxi to work. Now this isn’t where you imagine that we boarded the same taxi, or she followed me, hell no (as a matter of fact I never allowed to have my girlfriends sleep over each time they visited, that was a code I never broke, surprisingly… up to now). The trick that morning was that the taxi I boarded stopped over around the same stage, where she was standing, just a few feet behind her.
One thing caught my attention, as the clock was ticking in this morning rush, from where I sat even though she didn’t see me, I’d tell that she was really beautiful in my eyes, my mind quickly dug up the sensational feeling her soft lips trickled me with, her deep-ish but yet soft calm voice seemed to echo in my head. I happened to feel that even from where she stood, she didn’t wore the same smile she normally did even when in strangers, her eyes seemed to be a little socked in tears that had taken long to dry overnight, and I knew she was hurt deeply.
In that seat I was glued in for the couple of minutes the taxi stopped over at that stage, a coup-de-ta seemed to be on-going in mind, I conflicted on whether to jump out of that taxi, swallow my pride and tell her, “It’s ok, I’m here for you and I’ll hold you,” to hug her tight when she least expected it, but then… I had work, it was I to who always opened up the day’s business, without me nothing could totally operate at work, so I had to chill my my heart issues and push for work, and watch her stand there as she fixed her eyes on my taxi speed off, as though she knew or at least something told her, there was something about the vehicle that had stopped a few feet in behind her, (Hold up… so ya’ll thought I really got out?😱 well… just so you may know, at times my ego and pride seem to be something else😂😂😂) Anyways, at work I sent her impromptu a short message, the first four lines of this piece, for the thought of her pain never left mind, back home, the urge to finish up the lines was rising, and so I penned it down.
Story doesn’t ends there (there is post-publishing😁) I really wanted her to read this in a public space, so… Facebook it was for me, to be precise, the ‘men must talk’ group pulled off the whole gig, I sent them the piece like 3 weeks before it’s publication, and three weeks it took for them to respond (that response still rings in my mind to date). On publication, I couldn’t believe that the numbers were really shooting up high by the hour, in just a day, likes were over 1.8k (trust me, for a 19 year old that’s never gone public, and is a little fresh from high school waiting to join law school, that’s way too high) and by end of the following day, they were over 2.5 k. I excitedly shared with my big bro (it’s a story he loves sharing to colleagues, that my piece once got that much likes), I never read all the comments, but most of them really got me to where I am right now, I was super excited (little forms of tears welling up in my eyes at this point as I type this 🥺🙈)
Have I mentioned that my second girl at the time saw the post and commented whether I wrote the piece for her ? (well, like I said earlier, those were my adventurous days of knowing more about life, and what’s there to it, but that’s a story not for definitely for this space). Thing is, I was greatly inspired to keep on writing by what I thought was a mere small something. This piece, the events that preceded it, and those after, all came in to play for me to go public. Ouh, before I forget (I always love this part), this very piece saw me get my ever first online poetry student. Well, she was a medical student (she’s graduating this year) and in love with poetry I offered to teach her free of charge, but this wasn’t to just keep as a teacher-student relationship. Overtime, she has become a great friend and I pride in having made, and I always look out to making more (btw between you and me, I’ve never met her… physically in all these close to four years now, but I pride in her reaching out to learn, and appreciate the voice of poetry). I must also point out I’ve made quite a number of great friends through poetry and other write ups, who’ve advised me, and nurtured me in various ways, and I’m forever grateful.
Over time, since I begun writing and performing for the public (Done few public performances btw, still trying to master the art of spoken poetry), I got to learn that for most (if not all) poetry pieces, have a story behind them. Some funny, some emotional, some full of mixed feelings and others, well they are defined by their poets and authors… But what has made many of them outstanding, is the ability to comprehend and harmonize the language employed (even invent their own) with the emotions they allow themselves feel in that moment to engage and have a reader moved, touched or even fly.
Over the next 51, I’ll try exploring more of my stories (if any, which of course are) behind most of the pieces I’ve written so far, and in so doing, I hope to engage my audience in what really drives a poet(ess) to pen down a poem, from the beginning, to when it’s finally published or performed for the public. In so doing, I hope you get the inspiration to find your calling in writing or improve or otherwise,.

These and many more I’ll be dropping over the next few weeks as scheduled will be dedicated to all that wish to learn and draw a leaf (notably among my circles Janette Kirabo and Marvin Musiitwa, your are the forces driving me on this), those that wish to critic (I’m always open to critics) and those that may wish to add some more insight on my writings and what I deliver.
